With the start of the new academic year, we’d like to wish you a successful and peaceful one — and, with excitement, recommend a new book written by Prof. Orr Shalit, “The Analyst’s Gambit: A Second Course in Functional Analysis”.
This new volume is designed for a graduate-level course in functional analysis and serves as a natural continuation of Prof. Shalit’s earlier work, A First Course in Functional Analysis (2017).
Each of the two books, however, stands fully on its own.
The Analyst’s Gambit combines rigorous theory with a rich collection of applications drawn from diverse areas of mathematics — including partial differential equations, Fourier analysis, group theory, topology, and even neural networks.
It also explores classical topics such as Lomonosov’s invariant subspace theorem, the spectral theorem, and Stone’s theorem, illustrating both the depth and elegance of functional analysis.
Intended as a primary textbook for graduate students, the book features a wide variety of exercises and emphasizes substantial, modern applications of the theory.
A digital version of the book is downloadable from the Technion Library website for Technion users, or from the author for anyone interested.
