We'll give an accessible introduction to small-cancellation theory and discuss some of the early successes of the theory. These include solutions of the word and conjugacy problem for large classes of groups, along with the creation of exotic groups related to the Burnside problem. Examples of this latter type include finitely generated infinite torsion groups, Tarski monster groups, Gromov monster groups, etc.
